The End of an Era: Clint Dempsey

Clint Dempsey announces retirement

Clint Dempsey was a personal favorite of many US Soccer fans because of his style of play and effort every time he took the field. He retires from soccer as THE greatest US Men’s National Team player of all time, and I don’t really think it’s much of a debate.

Dempsey’s success in the English Premier League sets him apart from his country mates. While at Fulham he made over 180 appearances and scored 50 goals. Dempsey retires having scored the most goals by an American in the Premier League. His chip against Juventus (you may have heard of them) may go down as his best.

Of course everyone remembers his goal against Ghana in the 2014 World Cup. Most US fans had not even taken their seats before he found the back of the net.

Dempsey retires from the US National Team as the joint top scorer of all time with 57 goals. His passion and never say die attitude was on display every time he took the field. I think it will be a long time before we ever see a player quite like him.
