England 3 US 0
The US Men’s National Team was back in action today with a friendly against England. While, at times, much can be made about nothing in friendlies it was still an opportunity to check in on this young US team against top competition.
Brad Guzan GK
Not particularly at fault for any of the goals but probably should have conceded a PK early on. Passing out of the back was suspect as well.
Player Rating: 3 / 10
DeAndre Yedlin RB
Not able to get forward as much as he would have wanted. Had a bit of trouble in the first half with Sancho but Pulisic did not give him much help.
Player Rating: 3 / 10
Jorge Villafana LB
Minimal impact on the game. Did not get forward much, and when he did the service into the box was lacking. Held his own but I would like to see Antonee Robinson from now on.
Player Rating: 3 / 10
Matt Miazga CB
Showed good composure on the ball and in the air. Some good passes out of the back as well. I think Miazga should be the US’s first choice center back at the moment.
Player Rating: 5 / 10
John Brooks CB
At fault for the third goal as he was beaten too easy by Wilson. Played some nice long balls to Yedlin which threatened the England back line.
Player Rating: 4 / 10
Will Trapp CDM
I am not Trapp’s biggest fan but I thought he was one of the US’s better player’s today. Was one of the few who got stuck into tackles and tracked back nicely to stop dangerous England attacks. Not sure Trapp and McKennie were on the same page in the first half though.
Player Rating: 5 / 10
Weston McKennie CM
Was far more effective when playing higher up the field in the second half. With the lack of US possession in the first half, it was difficult for him to get involved. Remain very excited about McKennie going forward
Player Rating: 4 / 10
Julian Green CAM
Virtually did nothing in the 61 minutes he was on the field. Not all his fault considering how the US struggled to open the game.
Player Rating: 2 / 10
Tim Weah LW
Grew into the game as he was seen streaking down the wing more often in the second half but was in large part held in check.
Player Rating: 3 / 10
Christian Pulisic RW
Probably should have scored in the first half when he got in behind England’s back line. Looked like the US’s most dangerous player which comes as no surprise. Not sure winger is the best position for him on this US team as he did not track back particularly well for England’s first goal.
Player Rating: 5 / 10
Bobby Wood ST
His second half header should have at least troubled the keeper. Not able to get involved much and squandered any chances he did get.
Player Rating: 2 / 10
Game Notes:
- When are the US going to hire a coach? This is getting ridiculous.
- This game marked Wayne Rooney’s 120th cap for England which is the most all time for a field player.
- Jaden Sancho for England looks like the real deal. If he stays at Dortmund next year again I suspect Pulisic will be moving on.
